I pochi mesi dal lancio di ZephirWorks sono volati, pieni zeppi di impegni e di progetti interessanti, ma anche di soddisfazioni e gratificazioni, e come in ogni startup che si rispetti il clima in azienda è elettrizzante. Il rovescio della medaglia però è che stiamo lavorando come pazzi, probabilmente troppo.
Abbiamo già raccontato nei post precedenti quanto sia importante per noi fare lavori di qualità, rispettare i tempi concordati coi clienti, ma anche lavorare in modo sostenibile; abbiamo quindi deciso d allargare l'organico in anticipo rispetto alle previsioni.

Stiamo cercando almeno un collaboratore da inquadrare in un primo tempo con contratto a progetto, con l'obbiettivo di darci una mano sullo sviluppo dei progetti più urgenti. Successivamente, visto che sappiamo quanto sia importante lavorare con tranquillità, l'idea sarebbe di inquadrarla con un contratto più stabile.

Le tecnologie ricorrenti sulla gran parte dei progetti attivi sono:
- Ruby
- Rails
- PostgreSQL
- FreeBSD
Ma per ovvi motivi non disdegniamo anche Java, PHP, MySQL, Linux, sqlite, openldap; ma anche tecnologie come couchdb, hadoop, solr, freeswitch, asterisk, dovecot, postfix, e molte altre che usiamo e/o proponiamo ai nostri clienti.

Cerchiamo una persona che sia ragionevolmente produttiva da subito su Ruby on Rails e almeno FreeBSD e/o Linux; il resto lo può tranquillamente imparare da noi.

The few months since we launched ZephirWorks flew by, filled with many interesting projects but also satisfactions and great feedback from the first customers, and the atmosphere in the company is electrifying, as in any good startup. On the other hand, we have been working like crazy, probably too much. We have already mentioned in previous posts how important it is to us to deliver quality, respect project deadlines, but also work in a fashion that is sustainable over the long term; that's why we have decided to start growing the team in advance of our initial plans. We are looking for at least one full-time person on a project contract, to help us with the most important projects; after the initial period, we will probably offer him/her a permanent position. When we started talking about how we wanted to build our company and what we wanted to offer, we realized there were many things we thought we could do well; and while we want our values to be reflected in everything we do, some of the day to day goals were conflicting. For instance, we are passionate about Ruby on Rails and as developers we would be rather happy to use it exclusively; but at the same time, we realize there are some products that are interesting for our customers, even though they are developed in other languages.
Our answer to this dilemma is to structure the company into separate business units that will act in an independent yet coordinated way, bringing their respective expertise and peculiarities together into a complete service offering. Each division is free to make their own technological choices, without preclusions or a-priori choices.

ZephirWorks is the main unit; it doesn't sell products, it offers complete solutions that integrate services from other company units but also products and services from other companies, as long as they guarantee reliability, simplicity and flexibility in solving real problems. Most of the time this means Open Source products, of course, but we also offer some closed source solutions in areas where we think that's the best option for our customers.

ZephirWorks is made of people who are capable of managing projects of any complexity. With the sensibility that comes from an extensive experience as consultants, they work side by side with the customer, speaking his language and helping him at each step navigate the complexity of technology and make conscious decisions.

Some examples? we have been working with a VoIP provider to help them roll out their next generation offering; helping public libraries come up with new service models and offer internet access from their computers; supporting smaller IT startups to get their business up and running by providing them with technology that sets them apart from their competition.

Quando abbiamo iniziato a parlare di come vedevamo la nostra azienda e di cosa volevamo offrire, ci siamo resi conto che c'era tante cose che pensavamo di poter fare bene; e anche se vogliamo che i nostri valori siano presenti in tutto ciò che facciamo, alcuni dei dettagli più spiccioli erano in conflitto tra loro. Ad esempio, siamo fan sfegatati di Ruby on Rails e come sviluppatori saremmo ben felici di non usare altro; ma allo stesso tempi ci rendiamo conto che esistono alcuni prodotti interessanti per i nostri clienti, anche se sono sviluppati in altri linguaggi.

La nostra risposta a questo dilemma è stata strutturare l'azienda in divisioni separate che lavorano in modo indipendente ma coordinato, unendo le rispettive esperienze e particolarità in un'unica offerta completa. Ogni divisione è libera di operare le proprie scelte tecnologiche, senza costringerci a scelte a priori.

ZephirWorks è la capofila; non vende prodotti, ma offre soluzioni complete che integrano servizi delle altre divisioni aziendali così come prodotti e servizi presenti sul mercato, purché rispettino i nostri standard di affidabilità, semplicità e flessibilità nel risolvere problemi reali. Nella maggior parte dei casi questo significa prodotti Open Source, naturalmente; ma senza preclusioni, offriamo anche soluzioni closed source in aree dove crediamo che questo sia la migliore opzione per i nostri clienti.

ZephirWorks è fatta di persone che sono capaci di gestire progetti di ogni complessità. Con la sensibilità derivata da una lunga esperienza in ruoli consulenziali, affiancano il cliente, parlando la sua lingua e aiutandolo passo passo ad orientarsi nella miriade di tecnologie e ad operare scelte consapevoli.

Qualche esempio? stiamo lavorando con un provider di telefonia VoIP per aiutarli a realizzare la loro offerta di prossima generazione; stiamo aiutando biblioteche pubbliche ad inventare nuovi modelli di servizio con l'offerta di accesso ad Internet dalle loro postazioni; e supportando piccole startup IT ad espandersi fornendo loro tecnologia che li differenzia dai loro concorrenti.

Il lavoro fatto sull'immagine, questo blog, il nostro sito che verrà lanciato tra qualche giorno: fa tutto parte della nostra idea di comunicazione. In effetti il nostro lavoro si basa interamente sulla comunicazione, sul dialogo. Tentare di vendere ad un cliente una soluzione preconfezionata (ma che magari non risponde per niente alle sue esigenze) non fa parte del nostro stile; preferiamo mille volte ascoltarlo, parlarci, consigliarlo (magari davanti ad una buona birra o ad un piatto di sushi). E lo stesso vale per i nostri fornitori, collaboratori, partner, amici e chi più ne ha più ne metta. I blog, così come gli altri strumenti del "web 2.0", hanno un proprio spazio in questa ottica. Un blog non è l'equivalente di una "spalla", non è solo una vetrina che l'azienda usa per farsi pubblicità. Quello che vogliamo fare è raccontarvi in maniera molto più diretta, a volte seria, a volte magari ingenua o buffa quello che è il nostro mondo, fatto di IT, di business ma anche della realtà che ci circonda. E vogliamo sentire cosa ne pensate.

The work we did on our image, this blog, the website that we are going to launch in a few days: it's all part of our idea of communication. In fact, our job is entirely based on communication, on dialog. Trying to sell a shrink-wrapped solution to a customer, regardless of their needs, is not part of out style; we'd rather listen, talk, recommend (in front of a good beer or a dish of sushi, if possible). And the same goes for our suppliers, the people who work with us, our business partners, friends and so on. Blogs, as well as all "web 2.0" tools, fit very well into this view. A blog is not the equivalent of a newspaper's editorial column, it's not a storefront for a company to advertise itself. What we want to do is tell people about our world in a very direct way, at times serious, at times naive or funny; a world that is made of IT, of business but also of the reality that is around us all. And we want to hear from you.

Come spesso accade, ZephirWorks è un progetto che nasce un po' da duro lavoro, e un po' dal caso.
Le basi del progetto vengono poste 4 anni fa, quando i due fondatori si incontrano in università, scoprono di trovarsi simpatici e di avere parecchie cose in comune. Come spesso accade nella vita, i due prendono strade diverse, ma intanto approfondiscono la loro conoscenza.

Avanti veloce a questa primavera: i due decidono che i tempi sono maturi per pensare ad un progetto insieme, e in lunghe discussioni (e molti aperitivi) cominciano a mettere nero su bianco le loro idee.

E' il punto di partenza su cui basare la loro azienda "ideale". E in fondo, se è andata bene a Yang e Filo, e a Brin e Page, perché non a loro?

As often happens, ZephirWorks is a project that is born partly from hard work and partly by chance. The foundations of the project date back to 4 years ago, when the two founders meet at university, they find out they like each other and they have a lot in common. As it often happens in life, the two go in different directions, but in the meantime they get to know each other better. Fast forward to this spring: the two decide the time is ripe to think about a project together, and during long discussions (and many drinks together) they start to put their ideas on paper. It's the starting point for their "ideal" company. And after all, if it worked for Yang and Filo, and for Brin and Page, why not for them? Andrea Campi e Andrea C. Granata

Our ambition is to bring the best technology to small and medium enterprises, removing its complexity and making it easy to understand for everybody. To reach we use Open Source tools, working with and within the community. We believe in the advantages of collaboration, so we work with companies and independent professionals that share our values and our vision of the world. We like: Extreme Programming, Ruby on Rails, free software, creativity, projects completed on time and within budget, being bleeding edge, IT security, quality human relations with partners and clients... but also a rich life outside work, photography, good wine, long trips and good food. We don't like: heaviness, appearance before substance, never-ending project, knowledge that is not shared, software that doesn't work properly, boring people. La nostra ambizione è portare il meglio della tecnologia alle piccole e medie imprese, eliminando la complessità e rendendola comprensibile da tutti. Per riuscirci utilizziamo strumenti open-source, lavorando con e all'interno della comunità. Crediamo molto nei vantaggi della collaborazione; per questo motivo lavoriamo con altre società e con singoli professionisti che condividono i nostri valori e la nostra visione del mondo.
Cosa ci piace: Extreme Programming, Ruby on Rails, il software libero, la creatività, i progetti completati rispettando tempi e costi, essere bleeding edge, la sicurezza informatica, i rapporti umani di qualità con partner e clienti... ma anche avere una vita ricca al di fuori del lavoro, la fotografia, il buon vino, i lunghi viaggi e la buona cucina. Cosa non ci piace: la pesantezza, l'apparenza prima della sostanza, i progetti che non finiscono mai, la non condivisione della conoscenza, il software che funziona male, le persone noiose.

Chi ci conosce da tempo sa che da prima dell'estate stiamo lavorando su una nuova avventura, che finora è stata circondata dal mistero più totale: abbiamo raccontato a ben pochi cosa facciamo e che piani abbiamo, e nemmeno il nome!
In effetti la scelta del nome è stata un passo importante e su cui abbiamo ragionato molto, perché volevamo che esprimesse i valori nostri e di questo progetto. Ora finalmente è tempo di togliere il velo di mistero e presentare ZephirWorks!

In questi primi mesi abbiamo lavorato molto sull'immagine e sull'offerta, ma molti dettagli sono ancora in gestazione, e nelle prossime settimane lanceremo molte novità. Allo stesso tempo inizieremo a raccontarvi un po' di cose sulla società, le sue persone e le loro idee.

If you have know us for a while, you are probably aware that we've been working on a new adventure that so far has been surrounded by complete mysteriousness; we have only told a few people what we do and what our future plans are, and we haven't even told the name! To be sure, the choice of the name has been an important step; we pondered hard on it, because we wanted it to express our values as well as the values of this project. Now it's finally time to lift the veil and introduce ZephirWorks! These first few months have been largely spent working on our offering, as well as our strategy and image, but a lot of details still need to filled in, and in the next few weeks we'll have a lot of news. Meanwhile we'll start telling you a few things about the company, its people and their ideas. Keep an eye on this blog to make sure you are up to date!
